From ancient times, man has expressed his creativity in fine arts, as well as in garden art – from ancient Egypt, fascinating Hanging Gardens of Babylon, China, Japan and India, through the mystical medieval monastic gardens, the flourishing Renaissance in Italy, baroque (Castle of Versailles and its Gardens of renowned beauty) and romantic English gardens, all the way to modern times.

The art of spatial design of gardens, parks and other landscape complexes is often referred to as horticulture.

The cultivation of horticultural plants is of great economic importance and is based on different levels of knowledge suitable for hobbyists, professional plantsmen and scientists.
